Photos of my friend’s adventures in Iceland have been popping up in my feed for the past couple years & every photo is beautiful! I’m more of a warm-weather traveler, but after I saw all of the geothermal pools ( hot pots ) I figured I would just bundle up and make it work.
June thru August is the best season to travel in Iceland, but I have fire season that starts in June and also the prices jump considerably on June 1st. We decided to go late May to try and catch shoulder season. Flights on Wow! Airlines were approximately $500 each. It would have been about $300 each but we wanted to have more than one outfit each.
We decided to travel by camper van ( like every other 20-something ) Iceland is VERY expensive and by the time we looked at car rental and AirBnB it was about even with the camper van rental. Hopefully we will find camp sites that are open in late May, as camping has been restricted to official camp sites.
Icelandic weather is ever-changing, the joke is that if you don’t like the weather, wait an hour and it will change. Oftentimes you can experience all four seasons in one day. We have an outline on what we would like to visit each day, but everything ( barring a snorkel trip and blue lagoon reservation ) can be changed according to the weather.
I also borrowed a GoPro, fancy camera, and a drone. Add that to my iPhone X and I’m sure I’ll have more than enough content to share with everyone. -K
Hi! Val here *waves* I’ve always had this obsession with the land of cold places and northern lights. But being born and raised in Southern California, I’m spoiled with warm sunshine weather and have only gotten my fill of the cold with mini escapes to the mountains. I figured it was about time to go just go for it, once and for all. So here we are, in Iceland! I can’t wait to get my fill of lagoons and waterfalls.
We decided to go in May because life is a little calmer for both myself and Karina. With a job in corporate world, working towards my second masters (#Trojan), and volunteering as an academic advisor to a group of undergraduate women — you can definitely say I have my hands full. This is going to be a nice little getaway after a stressful semester.
We’re attacking this trip in the “cheapest” way possible and “roughing it”. And by that we mean — a five person camper for just two people, tons of thermal layers, lots of protein bars and snacks, a french press coffee maker, collagen/protein powder, MCT Oil, our favorite coffee brands and TONS of electronics. I guess you can say we’re glamping! lol – Val
