I’m a research-heavy traveler. I always feel like if I’m well prepared I will relax and enjoy myself when I arrive. This is usually the case, and at this point Val lets me consume every bit of information in advance and regurgitate it on the trip with a minimum of eye rolling!
I bought the Lonely Planet book for Iceland and for the Ring Road specifically. I also purchased a book that was written by an Icelander called Iceland Travel Guide. Shoutout to r/VisitingIceland for leading me down a rabbit hole of hours of information.
As far as clothing – I had some rain gear from various hikes & trips, but not much in the way of cold gear. I think I’ve bought the entire stock of of my local REI – hopefully I have enough waterproof clothing to brave the Icelandic weather.
I borrowed a GoPro, fancy-shmancy camera, and a drone from my well equipped friends. Add in my iPhone X and I think I’ll have more than enough imagery -K
I’m quite the opposite of Karina when it comes to travel. I like to just “wing it” and figure out things as we go. My secret is that I’ll tell Karina a few places that I want to go. She’ll forget that I told her, and then all of a sudden will have flights booked and a whole itinerary set. Who can say no to that when all you need to do is hop along!?
I’m just here for the ride. When I finally get around to actually looking into the trip, she’s already included all the things that I want to do. And with her background in disaster response, I never have to worry about getting stranded!! Talk about low stress 🙂
Being a SoCal native means that I have tons of shorts, sandals, tank-tops and hats. When it comes to cold gear, however, I only have what I need for snowboarding & skiing. My two trips to REI definitely did some damage, but now I have gear for my next trip to the mountains and a pair of awesome Kodiak boots that I absolutely love. I’ll most likely return the gear that I won’t use later (like my soft shell pants). – Val
